Olympic Down Draft kilns can be built of brick or fiber. The frame of the DownDraft is made of heavy angle iron and 1″ thick steel tubing. We’ve thickened both the brick and fiber insulation which is now backed with an 1″ airs pace created by the square tubing between the stainless steel jacket and the insulation. Four and one half inches of brick and 1″ ceramic fiberboard insulate the brick Down Drafts, and three inches of fiber with 1″ ceramic fiberboard insulate the fiber DownDrafts. We’ve added air space with the metal tubing to the doors of the fiber and brick DownDrafts to enhance the kiln’s strength and efficiency. Additionally, the air space results in a cooler outer surface and a thicker kiln door. Fiber and brick DownDrafts are built with double insulated floors, consisting of brick and ceramic fiberboard. The additional strength and insulation enables the kiln to fire at high temperatures, and to maintain temperatures without damage or deterioration. Efficient venturi burners are used on the Down Draft kilns with an option for blower burners if desired.
