Traditionally, Ragg wool is a robust wool yarn characterized by its unique flecked pattern, stemming from the blend of dyed and undyed wool. The term “Ragg” finds its roots in the Norwegian word “raggosokk”, which refers to a heavy, coarse woolen sock.
Dave Jagger shares a touching anecdote about its origins. During a yarn show in New York, he encountered a Scandinavian woman who narrated the post-World War I scenario. With resources scant, old sweaters were unraveled to reuse the yarn. The uneven wear of the yarn, like worn-out elbows of a sweater, was ingeniously camouflaged by plying strands together. Pairing two strands of a color with a contrasting strand not only concealed the unevenness but birthed the iconic Ragg wool, predominantly used for socks.
