Chromite is a mineral ore rich in iron and chromium oxides having a temperature stable spinel crystal structure like many ceramic glaze stains. It can actually be used as an economical nearly-black stain for glazes (~5%). A truer black is possible with the addition of <1% cobalt oxide.
