These well made, metal, heavy duty bobbin winders are made to last. Where so many tools of modern days have lots of plastic gears, which can weaken and crack over time, Glimakra makes their winders out of cast iron and brass. Even Hubby was impressed when he was packaging these up and commented on how well made they are! Glimakra recommends a drop of sewing machine or spinning wheel oil at the “oiling points” on their winders to keep them running smoothly and silently, making short work of winding bobbins.
Choose either fine or thick spindle. The fine spindle is typically used for paper quills and The thick would be used for plastic or wooden boat shuttle bobbins. If you want to “kill two birds with one stone” and have only one bobbin winder, your best choice would be the fine as you can “shim” up a regular bobbin by first placing a paper quill on the stem, then slide the larger bobbin or spool over the quill.
Note: Ashford’s plastic boat shuttle bobbins have a very narrow core, unlike most brands of bobbins.
